Rye had been on my list of places to visit for a long time.
This charming coastal town in East Sussex is known for its cobbled streets and rich fishermen's history.
For my birthday, I wanted to do something special, and a seaside staycation felt like the perfect choice.
So, I decided that Rye would be the place.
Where to stay in Rye
During the pandemic, I spent plenty of time scrolling through Instagram when a hotel in Rye caught my eye. They were in the midst of renovations, promising a beautifully restored space once they reopened. Intrigued, I saved their details and kept an eye on their progress.
For months, I followed their updates, and when they finally announced their grand opening, I knew we had to visit!
The hotel, The George in Rye, is absolutely gorgeous—both inside and out. The staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, making us feel right at home.
Our room, located on the ground floor, was cosy and warm—exactly what we needed. The interiors were beautifully designed—colourful yet classic. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast which got us ready for the day ahead. I only wished we could have stayed longer!
Where to eat in Rye
Before our trip to Rye, I did some research and came across Marco’s, a Mediterranean restaurant with a cool, eclectic vibe. The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, with bold colours on the walls and a perfectly curated soundtrack that matched the ambience.
The menu was diverse, offering a great selection of dishes alongside an impressive cocktail list. The food was really nice. I picked a delicious Basque cheesecake for dessert, and the two wonderful waiters surprised me by bringing it out with a candle while singing Happy Birthday! It was such a sweet touch.
It all came together beautifully!
If you're visiting at night, be sure to know the location in advance, as the restaurant can look a bit dark from the outside!
The next day, we had lunch at The Fig, another spot on my list to check out.
It was quite busy, but we managed to get a small table despite the crowd. The menu was more limited compared to our previous restaurant, but the food was delicious—exactly the warm, comforting meal we needed!
What to do in Rye
One of the best things to do in Rye is simply to wander its charming streets and explore the many
unique shops. The town is filled with vintage stores where you can find antique furniture, wooden signs and all kinds of timeless treasures.
Beyond that, Rye has an incredible mix of music and record shops, art galleries, and cosy coffee spots. I completely fell in love with a second-hand clothing shop - I wanted to buy everything!-
and I truly enjoyed just walking around the streets and taking in the charm of this beautiful town.
Later, we made our way to Camber Sands for a walk along the shore. The wind was strong, but just seeing the sea made it all worthwhile—a perfect way to end our time in Rye.
