Travel blog: Plans to do in Palamós, Costa Brava

I am still daydreaming about the week back in August that I spent in Palamós, a charming town on the Costa Brava.

I’m filled with a deep sense of nostalgia and love for this place. Situated just north of Barcelona, the Costa Brava has been a second home to me since I was born.

I have been going to this city since little, spending long hot summers there with my family. I am lucky enough to enjoy a week there in August since I have been living abroad...

It is such a lively and pretty town during summer: during the years I kept organising plans with friends and family there. It holds lots of memories for me!

For the last few months, I have been thinking that I would like to share a bit more about my travel photography, so I thought talking about my latest trip would be a great occasion to start my first travel post.

So, for my first September post, I’m inviting you to explore Palamós, a town full of charm, history, and things to do. Whether you've never been or you're planning your next trip, here are some recommendations from an "almost" local, if I can call myself that!

Palamós is a fishing town on the northeastern coast of Catalunya, known for its picturesque beaches, stunning landscapes, and delicious seafood, especially the Palamos prawn!

It’s located in the province of Girona, in the heart of the Costa Brava—a region famous for its rugged coastline, hidden coves, and turquoise waters.

The town itself is a mix of old-world charm and modern energy, with a lively port, narrow streets full of boutique shops, and a variety of restaurants offering both traditional Catalan dishes and international fusion cuisine.

The summer months, especially August, see Palamós come to life. The town is bustling with both locals and tourists, and the atmosphere is very lively —whether you’re lounging on the beach, strolling along the seafront, or enjoying a drink with friends at a local "chiringuito" (beach bar). Here are some of the places and experiences I’d recommend if you’re planning a trip.

Restaurants I recommend

El Pirata

This is a Japanese and Mediterranean fusion restaurant and it has quickly become one of my favourites.

It’s a great spot to enjoy with friends—whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply gathering for a meal.

I brought a group of friends here for a hen do, and we had an amazing lunch. The group menu was perfect for the occasion, with plenty of wine flowing and delicious food to match. We sat outside, enjoying the lively atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Waves at La Fosca Beach

This restaurant is located right in front of La Fosca beach, one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in Palamós. The views are unbeatable, and the food is just as good.

We opted for tapas—perfect for sharing—and a few friends ordered paella, which they raved about. The laid-back vibe and seaside setting make it an ideal spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner after a day at the beach.

L'Arcada

L’Arcada is a classic choice for those looking to experience traditional Catalan cuisine. I’ve been coming here with my parents for years! The last time I visited was with my mum, and we indulged in "chipirones" (fried small squid) and some fresh fish. It’s a place that feels like home—a cosy atmosphere, friendly service, and dishes that make you feel like you’re at a family gathering.

If you’re visiting Palamós with family, this is a great spot to experience the warmth of Catalan hospitality and flavours.

There are so many restaurants around Palamós, especially in the city centre, so it is always worth it to wander around and see what else is on offer, we may discover a new favourite!

Must do plans

Apart from trying all these delicious restaurants, there are some plans that I keep doing once and once again and I never get bored of them. Here are some of my favourite plans to do in Palamós:

Drinks and Views at Plaça Murada

If you’re in the mood for some people-watching and a relaxing evening, head over to Plaça Murada. Grab a drink and some "picoteo" (small bites) while you take in the views of the town. It’s a lovely spot to unwind after a day of exploring or hitting the beach. Perfect sunset spot as well!

Walk to the Lighthouse

One of my all-time favourite activities in Palamós is the walk to the lighthouse. The views are stunning, and the trail is a peaceful escape from the more bustling parts of town. Along the way, you can take in the rugged beauty of the Costa Brava coastline, with its cliffs and clear waters stretching out below.

Explore Carrer Major

If you’re in the mood for shopping, Carrer Major is the place to go. The street is lined with small shops offering everything from clothing and accessories to local crafts and souvenirs. I love wandering here, finding unique pieces to bring back home. This is my mum's and my favourite plan!

Stroll Along the Seafront

The seafront promenade is another must-do in Palamós. The lively atmosphere is infectious, especially in the evening when the town truly comes to life. During my visit, I even caught a traditional "sardanes" performance—a Catalan folk dance - and an orchestra playing.

You’ll often find live music or street performances here during the summer months, adding to the festive feel.

Relax at a Chiringuito

Of course, no visit to the Costa Brava is complete without spending some time at a "chiringuito". These beach bars are scattered along the coast, offering drinks, snacks, and the perfect spot to relax by the water. After a long day of exploring, there’s nothing better than seating down with a cold drink and watching the sunset. From day to night, these "chiringuitos" are always busy!

Visit the Port and the Fishing Museum

Another lovely plan to do is to visit the Fishing Museum. I visited for the first time this year and it was very interesting to learn about the fishermen's lives. Afterwards, you can also walk around the port and see the boats, especially the big cruises that come to Palamós during summertime. You can also go inside the fish market when it is open to see and buy fresh fish if you feel like cooking!

Music festivals

There are also lots of music festivals during the summer months in and around Palamós. We went to Nomad festival which was very close to our house. There were plenty of food trucks and stalls selling handmade products, 2 different stages with music and activities throughout the evening. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it was like being at a garden party with views of the sea.

Why You Should Visit Palamós

Palamós is a combination of beautiful beaches, delicious food, and a very traditional coast village, making it a must-visit destination in Costa Brava. Whether you’re coming with friends, family, or on your own, you’ll find something to love here.

So, if you’ve never been to Palamós, consider this your sign to go, and don't forget to write down my recommendations :)
